Upcoming Events

A selection of the best of Chilean Handicrafts will be exhibited at the Molaa Museum April 25-27, 2008 in Los Angeles

ProChile Los Angeles in cooperation with the Museum of Latin American Art of Los Angeles (MOLAA) will host the first Trunk Show of Chilean Handicrafts in the United States and an opening cocktail reception on Friday 25th at 7:00 PM in the museum. The museum's permanent collection as well as the Trunk Show will be open to the guests during the reception.

Four organizations of Chilean artisans will participate in the event, showcasing the finest craft making traditions representative of regions North to South.

“The Black Continent” a play by Chilean playwright Marco Antonio de la Parra
April 17- May 4, 2008 in New York

Teatro IATI (International Theatre Arts Institute) marks its 40th anniversary celebration with the New York premiere of “El Continente Negro” (“The Black Continent”), a contemporary drama by celebrated Chilean playwright Marco Antonio de la Parra and directed by fellow Chilean Matias Balmaceda.

Deemed one of the best living playwrights from Chile, Marco Antonio de la Parra’s works have been widely produced throughout Latin America, the U.S. and Europe.

ProChile and Wines of Chile will have the honor of sponsoring the Annual Fundraising Night on Friday, April 25th, 2008 from 9:30pm to 12:00am following the performance.

Three Chilean films to participate in the Newport Beach Film Festival
April 24 –May 1st, Orange County, California

Three Chilean movies and one short will be shown at the 2008 Newport Beach Film Festival, one of the most prestigious multicultural events in the movie industry, which attracts over 40,000 attendees each year. The 2008 Festival will show the U.S. premier of “Lo Bueno de Llorar” directed by Matías Bize, “El Brindis” directed by Shai Agosín -which recently won the Audience Award at The San Diego Latino Film Festival- “Radio Corazón” directed by Roberto Artiagoitía, and “Catalina” a short directed by James Katz.

On April 27th ProChile will be hosting a reception for 600 people where filmgoers will have the opportunity to meet the filmmakers. Gabriel Díaz DP (Director of Photography) of “Lo Bueno de LLorar” will be the special guest of the event.

The play "The Staircase” is coming up at Sanford Meisner Theater
May 2-5, 2008 in New York City

Only 5 performances of “The Staircase” will be staged at the Sanford Meisner Theater in Chelsea.

“The Staircase”, written and directed by Chilean director/playwright/actor Andrea Moro, is an intriguing story about two young siblings elaborating a petrifying plan. ProChile along with Wines of Chile will be hosting the opening night reception on Friday May 2nd following the show.

US premiere of “Radio Corazón” by Roberto Artiagoitia at The Havana Film Festival
April 14-15 in New York City

The Havana Film Festival New York (HFFNY) has become an internationally recognized film festival celebrating Latin American cinema. This year's event included the US premiere of the Chilean movie "Radio Corazón". ProChile, along with Wines of Chile, were also present at HFFNY, sponsoring the Festival’s Benefit Night.

The film is based on true stories from the most successful Chilean radio show of all time. Composed of three funny, sexy and romantic short stories, “Radio Corazón” was nominated for Best Film at the 2007 Cartagena Film Festival, as well as garnered a nomination for Best Actress at the Viña del Mar Film Festival 2008.

 
Chile attends the Locations Trade Show in Santa Monica and Locations Magazine cover page feature
April 10-12, 2008 in California

ProChile participated in the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI) Locations Trade Show in Santa Monica, California for the third consecutive year.

This year’s Locations Magazine, the AFCI’s official publication, features a magnificent view of the palafito houses on Chiloe Island on this year’s cover page. The publication’s main article highlights the diversity of Chile’s natural landscapes, making for a perfect film-shooting destination. The feature also gives accolade to heritage sites and historic landmarks, which have been proclaimed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

James Bond shoots part of latest movie “Quantum of Solace” in the North of Chile

The highly anticipated James Bond film, “Quantum of Solace,” shot its 22nd episode in Antofagasta city and surrounding locations in the Second Region of Chile, which claims the driest desert in the world. The broadcasting campaign and high visibility of the film is expected to be a positive promotion of Chile as a film destination.

“Quantum of Solace” is directed by Academy Award nominee Marc Forster (“The Kite Runner”, “Finding Neverland”, “Monster’s Ball”) and features Daniel Craig, who also played the character in the most recent James Bond film “Casino Royale” (2006).

 

Chilean artist at the Consulate General of Chile
April 3-30, 2008 in New York City

Chilean artist Jeannette Sura Sababa’s exhibition, “Revolution,” will be on display during the month of April at the Chilean Consulate in New York. ProChile sponsored the April 3rd opening night with a wine and cheese reception.

Ms. Sura has had several successful collective and individual exhibitions in the past, and her work has won several awards from the Art Students League of New York. She was born in Valparaiso, Chile, and currently works and resides in Manhattan.

 

Chilean film screenings at the 15th San Diego Latino Film Festival 2008
March 6-7, San Diego

The 15th San Diego Latino Film Festival 2008, sponsored by ProChile, featured four Chilean films, as well as three others produced in partnership with Mexico. The film “El Brindis,” directed by Shai Agosin, captured the festival’s Audience Award.

As an official sponsor of the festival, ProChile held a wine reception at the Keating hotel with special attendance by director Roberto Artiagoitía, who shared insights on “Radio Corazon” and the state of Chilean cinema. Considered a huge success by the festival organization, the event drew nearly 19,000 attendees during the course of 166 film showings.

Collages by Chilean artist Maria Elena Etchepare at the Jadite Gallery.
March 3 - 15, 2008 in New York City

Chilean artist Maria Elena Etchepare displayed her work at the exhibition "Contemporary International Artists" at the Jadite Gallery in New York. Ms. Etchepare was selected to represent Chile in the Gallery’s exhibition titled “Artistas Iberoamericanos” which recognized artists from across Latin America and Spain.

Ms. Etchepare was born in Santiago, Chile, and has had numerous exhibitions both in Chile and abroad.
 
Hollywood premiere of Chilean movie "Ugly Me"
February 7, 2008 in Los Angeles

ProChile Los Angeles supported the screening of “Ugly Me”, is the first film by Chilean writer and director Claudio Dabed. The film (Pretendiendo, in Spanish) was conceived as a universal Latin American film, using neutral Spanish accent and casting actors from different countries, including the famous Mexican Actress Barbara Mori (La Mujer de mi Hermano) and the Argentinean comic actor Marcelo Mazzarello.

ProChile sponsored the benefit reception of Ariel Dorfman’s “Widows”
January 16, 2008 in New York City

ProChile proudly hosted the opening night benefit reception of the play “Widows” and featured a variety of Chilean wines. Attendees including the film’s writer, Ariel Dorfman, actors and guests, gathered at the 59E59 Theatre in Manhattan immediately following the performance.

Mr. Dorfman is a Chilean novelist, writer, scriptwriter, teacher and human rights activist. His work and essays are world wide known and “The Death and the Maiden”, his most famous piece, was taken to the widescreen in 1994 by Roman Polansky, starring Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley.
