Teatro IATI (International Theatre Arts Institute) kicks off its 40th anniversary celebration with the New York premiere of El Continente Negro (The Black Continent), a contemporary drama by celebrated Chilean playwright Marco Antonio de la Parra.
ProChile and Wines of Chile will have the honor of sponsoring the Annual Fundraising Night on Friday, April 25th, 2008. During this event our guests (approximately 100), including sponsors, entertainment medias, the community of the Lower East Side and other New York City communities, will attend a performance and later mingle with actors, discuss the play during a private reception (9:30pm-12:00am), where they may enjoy wine and food, live music from an Uruguayan Band and Dominican singer Laura Sanchez, and several raffle events.
In the play twelve characters weave in and out of each other’s lives, but moments of raw human connection are few and far between. While phone calls from loved ones and even strangers offer fleeting opportunities to break from the past, each character finds the distance between who we are and who we’d like to become is often unbridgeable. With desperation, humor, cynicism and hope, these men and women long for love. Yet all too often they have only one foot in the here-and-now and another foot in a place of tomorrows, the Black Continent.
Deemed one of the best living playwrights from Chile, Marco Antonio de la Parra’s works have been widely produced throughout Latin America, the U.S. and Europe. A Mexican screen adaptation of Continente Negro is set to debut in 2009.
